Glencoe Youth Lacrosse FAQ’s

Who can sign up for Glencoe Youth Lacrosse?

-Any boys in 3rd through 8th grade who are interested in playing lacrosse and reside in the Glencoe high school feeder area.

***Girls who are interested in playing lacrosse can sign up under Hillsboro United Girls Lacrosse.

How are teams organized?

-Teams are first divided by age group: 3rd & 4th grade, 5th & 6th grade and 7th & 8th grade. Depending on the number of registered players, multiple teams may be formed under each age group. Those teams will be balanced equally based on skill level to ensure all the teams are at the same level of competitiveness. If we don’t have enough Glencoe youth players to field a team, we’ll combine with another Hillsboro area high school feeder.

Why is a USA Lacrosse Membership required, it never used to be?

-In the years past, players were registered through Hillsboro Parks and Rec and covered under their liability. Now our program and players are responsible for that coverage. USA Lacrosse membership not only ensures proper insurance coverage for the program but also functions as medical coverage for your player during practices or games. It also provides many other benefits, such as: subscription to their USA Lacrosse magazine, access to how-to videos, articles, clinics for players and coaches, special offers on gear and apparel, and more. USA Lacrosse memberships are standard practice for the majority of off-season lacrosse programs locally, and they are good for an entire year. This means as long as your membership is current, it will be accepted by any other lacrosse program or activity that requires it. Believe it or not, there are many opportunities for lacrosse during the summer, fall and even winter through other organizations. Go to https://usalacrosse.org, and hover over the ‘players’ tab to find more information about memberships and how to join.

Does GYL participate in fundraisers to help reduce registration costs?

-We know fundraising is time consuming for players, parents and board members, but we also like to keep fees low. So, we’ve come up with a few ways you can help with minimal effort. AmazonSmile, Fred Meyer and Bottle Drop can all now support Glencoe Lacrosse. AmazonSmile and Fred Meyer will donate a portion of your purchases to Glencoe Lacrosse once you set them as your charity on your account. With Bottle Drop, you can designate your refunds to go to Glencoe Lacrosse or we can give you blue bags to fill which will automatically direct funds to us once the bags are dropped at a Bottle Drop center. The best part is that you can ask family and friends to change their settings to support Glencoe Lacrosse as well.

Is there financial assistance available?

-We are a volunteer, non-profit organization that receives no financial assistance from the city or other entities. We try to keep fees as affordable as we can, so financial aid is limited. That said, we’re happy to work with you to arrange payment plans, find loaner gear, and find assistance from organizations like USA Lacrosse or https://everykidsports.org/. We want to get your kid on the field, learning to love to play lacrosse!

What equipment/gear is required to play lacrosse for 2022?

-Helmet, chest pad, elbow pads, gloves, stick, cup, mouthguard, non-metal cleats, and a personal water bottle are required.  As of now, covid masks are not required, but please remember that field rules are subject to change.

-ALL PLAYERS chest pads must meet 2022 NOCSAE standards as of Jan. 1, 2022

It is too expensive for me to purchase all this equipment. Is there a cheaper way?

-New players will receive a new stick from the RPK fund.  We have an equipment loaner program that helps lessen the cost of equipment for those that need it. While we strive to keep a decent stock of equipment on hand, we can not guarantee that we will have the sizes you need or all the equipment you need.

What does a typical practice/game schedule look like?

-We aim for 2-3 practices a week (depending on grade level) and games on Saturdays. Days and times of practices can vary from year to year and are dependent on field availability. Practices typically don’t start until 5pm and can run as late as 9pm for the older players. Most practices this season will be at Evergreen Middle School. Saturday game times and locations will vary.

Where are games played?

-Home games are typically played at 53rd Ave or Evergreen Middle School. Away games are dependent on the teams we schedule with each year, and can be anywhere in the surrounding Portland area. Some travel is expected each season, but away games are typically no more than an hour away.

How can I volunteer?

-Volunteers are vital in keeping our Youth Lacrosse program running. We have many opportunities for volunteers each year and with yearly turn-over, we are always in need of new volunteers. Here is a list of possible opportunities:  team parent, coaches and assistant coaches, marketing manager, bottle drop manager, social media manager, website manager, loaner equipment manager, practice and game scheduling, time keeper for games, uniform assistance, photographer, board member.
